God has blessed the IME network with over 700 leaders who have planted thousands of communities of faith among unreached people groups from diverse backgrounds who meet in homes, farm fields and brick and mortar churches. These teams serve in several major cities along the Nile River in holistic ministries including sports, refugees, trauma ministry, prison ministry, social media outreach, and addiction recovery.

Understanding the Context of Egypt

General Country Information

Egypt is called the “mother of the world” for its long history and ancient civilizations. Today it is the largest country by population in the Middle East and North Africa region. Egypt is centered around the Nile river, whose fertile valley nourishes and feeds millions.

Spiritual Context

Egypt, while a Muslim majority, has a largest Christian population in the MENA region, with nearly 10% identifying as Coptic Orthodox, aligned with the Oriental Orthodox communion. There is a smaller percentage of these who are evangelical, catholic and other denominations. The Egyptian church is very active and sends missionaries all over the MENA region.

Biblical Heritage

Egypt also boasts a long history of Christianity dating back to the Pharaohs, Joseph and the Exodus. The Holy Family also sought refuge from King Herod shortly after Jesus’ birth. The Apostle Mark is thought to have brought the gospel to Egypt where it spread rapidly and became the official religion for 400 years.
